sunburst granny square tutorial
Hello!
Today I have prepared a picture tutorial for Priscilla Hewitt’s Sunburst Granny Square .The written pattern can be found here:
priscillascrochet.net/free patterns/Afghan Squares/Sunburst Granny Square.pdf
Chain 5. Join with a sl st to form a ring.
The chain 3 will count as the first dc , work 15 more dc in the ring;
join with a sl st.(16dc). Fasten off.
Attach next colour with a sl st to any dc,
puff st in the same st and in each dc around. Here is how to do the puff st:
Yarn over, insert hook in the st and pull up a long loop
pull up another long loop from the same stitch
yarn over again(3 times in total)
yarn over and pull through all remaining 7 loops on hook, chain 1 to lock.
puff st in each dc around, join with a sl st to the first puff st.
Round 3: attach next colour with a sl st to any ch1 space of any puff st,ch2
Now we will be making cluster stitch in each ch1 space
yarn over , insert hook in the st and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops-4 times
yarn over and pull through all 5 remaining loops on hook
you make the cluster st ,ch2 in each chain1 space all around
join with a sl st to the beginning cluster st.
Round 4;
attach next colour with a sl st to any ch2 space
ch4to count as the 1st trc,2trc in the same sp
3trc,ch3,3trc in the next ch2 sp
continue this pattern-3dc,3hdc,3dc in the next ch2 spaces and 3trc,chain3,3trc in the next ch2 sp
3trc as the same sp as beginning trc , ch3 ; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch4
this is how your square will look like
the following rounds 5-7 are worked as for a regular granny square.
Good-luck with your new project!

Thank you for sharing. Maybe one day I’ll make a granny square creation as nice as the blankets you made for your children.

Thank you for taking time to write a comment. I like granny squares because they are so easy to make; you work each granny square indvidually and you do not need to carry a big blanket around . And when all the squares are done , la voila! such a joy to join them. Looking forward to see your own grannies….

Thank you so very much for this pictorial tutorial! I learn so much better and faster with pictures and video rather than reading and trying to figure out a written pattern. Having this and going through it last night I made my first square to begin my queen sized cover. Yes, it will take a while, but it will be awesome. I really appreciate the time you took to document this.

Thanks, I have 20 colors not including the white which will be the border. I ended up putting another row of white around the square to make it a bit bigger since I found that the number of squares I would need to be quite daunting. I am enjoying making them. They go really fast and I can make several and then move on to several other projects I have currently going as well. I keep trying to figure out how I could make these into a pot holder though, other than using cotton yarn. Any suggestions?

I’m planning to make a granny blanket. But I’m in doubt about the yarn. Wool or coton….. Can you give me advise, or someone else.
Thanks. Anet

Dear Anet,
Thank you for visiting my blog.As for your question; the answer is That it depends where you live. If you live in a colder climate I suggest wool, but if you live in a hotter climate like me – Cyprus can be very hot!- I suggest cotton or cotton blends.

I used merserized cotton and that worked well. Later I tried the same pattern with bamboo and that worked well too!The pattern is so gorgeous that it works with any yarn,I think.

I am so glad to see your photo tutorial. I decided to teach myself to crochet online last Thursday so this weekend I have been searching sites to find ideas and tutorials. I made my first square but saw a sunburst pattern and loved it. I am excited to use your site to make a blanket! Hopefully I will get faster – it took me all weekend to do two squares, but I’ve never crocheted before and it took me a while to understand the tension! (My first square is the same pattern as the second but almost twice as big because I was so loose to start).
Thanks again! And I love your colors!

Your tutorial is fantastic!:) Would you please explain rounds 5-7? This is my first attempt at anything ‘granny’ and I have no clue what your directions refer to. Thanks!:)

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s equally educative and engaging, and without a doubt,
you’ve hit the nail on the head. The issue is something which too few folks are speaking intelligently about. Now i’m very happy I came across this
during my search for something regarding this.

I’ve always been a bit wary about crochet but having seen your work and the excellent instructions which even I can understand, I’m going to have another go. I do lots of knitting no problem, but crochet………..
This is my first visit but it won’t be my last. Thank you.
